Why should businesses embrace renewable energy?

It makes sound financial sense for businesses to install renewable energy on their premises, especially wind power.

Electricity and gas prices have already risen 30% in real terms over the past five years, prompting a major increase in consumers classified as “fuel poor”.

Businesses face a further problem. Climate change legislation from the UK and Europe, designed to curb the emissions of large industrial energy consumers, has left many businesses facing an impossible commercial choice: cut emissions and cut productivity, or pay the levies.

According to the government, the Renewables Obligation, the Climate Change Levy, the EU ETS and the Carbon Reduction Commitment could increase industrial energy bills by an expected 21%, while existing climate change policies will add around 55%.

Wind Energy Direct has a solution – an on-site renewable resource

Wind Energy Direct believes that businesses should be able to take advantage of the renewable energy revolution too.

We install wind turbines on industrial sites using our own capital, so there are no upfront costs for our customers.  We then sell the electricity produced back to the site at a significant discount to the retail rate, enabling our customers to comply with emissions regulations and cut their energy bills at the same time.

We also offer a joint venture solution, if customers would like to be involved in the financing of the project, and take advantage of some of the benefits of installing wind power in the UK.  The UK has two major financial incentives for investment in wind power, which are designed to encourage take up of wind power.  We negotiate the terms of the joint venture from the outset, to ensure that you can maximise the benefits.

Feed in tariff

For projects of 5MW and under the Green Energy Cashback scheme offers a fixed rate per kWh generated by your turbine, as well as a feed-in tariff rate for excess energy sold to the grid. The price for the electricity depends on when the installation took place, but it can be as much as five times the standard rate.

Renewables Obligation Certificate

Projects over 5MW are entitled to financial support under the Renewables Obligation Scheme.  Electricity is sold to the grid, and for each unit, usually a MWh, the generator is allocated a Renewables Obligation Certificate (ROC) which can then be sold on the lucrative ROCs market.  Large energy consumers, i.e. power companies, are incentivised to hand over a set amount of ROCs to the government each year, ensuring the demand for the ROC on the market.
